Rivals and Retribution by Shannon Delany (13 to Life #5)
In Rivals and Retribution, the fifth book in the 13 to Life series by Shannon Delany, Pietr and Jessie will find themselves caught in a pack war with a new breed of werewolves.
Jessie Gillmansen is in trouble again and she’s in for the fight of her life–and Pietr’s! With Marlaena’s dangerous wolf pack putting more pressure on the Rusakova family, change is inevitable and when it comes, it brings a heavy price that forces Alexi into action to save his youngest brother’s heart, head, and life. In the stunning conclusion of this celebrated paranormal series two werewolf families fight for control of the small town of Junction, control of each other and–most elusive of all–control of themselves. Now I didn’t realize that this was it for the series until not too long ago. I am quite sad to see the characters go to be honest with you. But I am pretty sure that Shannon will continue to write books and publish them so I know that I will fall in love with some of her other characters!
Poor Jessie and Pietr!! I feel like that is not said enough, they go through soooooo much to be together and this book is no exception. It begins with Jessie being kidnapped by Marlaena’s group and it gets worse from there. I mean I didn’t think there was much more that could happen to them so when they got Jessie back, and they found out that the antidote didn’t actually hold, well all hell broke loose.
Marlaena’s pack is staying with the Rusakova pack and apparently something HUGE happens between Pietr and Marlaena. Yea I am not telling you what it is exactly but there were times that I thought I might cry, okay I lied I totally sobbed because of everything, I honestly don’t think Jessie got a lot of credit for being an awesome heroine. She was loving and tough and smart. She cared about everyone’s feelings and didn’t want anything bad to happen to anyone even Marlaena after everything she did to her.
The ending of the book was just what I wanted it to be and I am pretty sure that if it ended any other way, I would have been fuming. Now I am not going to lie, the very last of it I am not sure what that meant so don’t ask me. But I am pretty sure it wasn’t good. Yea it was a very good and confusing ending. Nothing like keeping the reader on their toes, Shannon.
I gave this final book in the series 4 out of 5 stars!
Jessie Boone is a self proclaimed bad boy and doesn’t march to the beat of anyone’s drum, but his own. Growing up in less than desirable circumstances has made him no stranger to the hard knock life and his determination to leave it behind is fierce. When he finds himself transferred to East Franklin High School, he sees his opportunity to use his athletic ability to snag a college football scholarship, but Forbes Henderson, the player Jessie means to replace isn’t giving up his spot willingly. In fact, Forbes is willing to go to extreme measures to retain his place as first string quarterback. When Forbes’ malicious plan to injure his replacement fails, Jessie is furious and determined to show him he messed with the wrong person; not only is he going to take the position of first string quarterback, he’s going to take his girl, too.
Claire Deveraux is perfection at it’s best. She is beautiful, intelligent and unaware she just became Jessie Boone’s conquest as revenge against her boyfriend, Forbes Henderson. Like her flawless performance as the perfect daughter and student, Claire’s production of being the perfect girlfriend has everyone fooled, except Jessie Boone, and she fears this tattooed bad boy will see her secret desire to explore his crude threats and promises to rock her perfect world. If she decides to give in to one uninhibited moment with Jessie, will she learn too late that it was all an act of vengeance or will Jessie learn the taste of first love is sweeter than that of revenge? This story was really good. I had moments where I swooned literally and honestly was like “Why didn’t that happen with my husband before we got married?” Then I realized we were a lot older when we started dating. There were other very emotional parts of the book and I couldn’t help the tears that came to my eyes. Emotional rollercoaster is more likely what this book was.
Poor Jessie, you could honestly see that there was a good kid in there but his situations would not allow him to be. I love how he was going to get back at Forbes for just being an ass but ended up really falling for the girl he was going to steal from him. I really didn’t like that his grandma was horrible to him and that he had to visit his brothers at a foster home because his mom was just as horrible. I felt so bad for his character but I do like that he rose above that.
Now Claire seemed like she had everything but when in reality she was just so miserable in her life, she didn’t care about her boyfriend and he was being pushy. I am glad that she gave Jessie the time of day even if in the beginning it was to get back at him for something he said about her. Yea they definitely had a crazy relationship. But when he hurt her, I started to cry for her because you could just feel how horrible it was for her based on the amazing writing.
Now Claire’s dad seemed like an amazing person and so did her mom even though she had her moment that I seriously did not like. Her best friend was so funny, I loved how she didn’t take Forbes or Jessie’s crap and always ALWAYS stuck up for Claire.
I can’t wait for her next book to come out. I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars.
